This is the question I hear so often lately in the expert-led business space: where does your expertise sit in a world where AI can write the report, draft the strategy, and build the slide deck in minutes?
For some owners, the answer is fear. For others, it is ten new tools, ten new ideas, and nothing finished by Friday. Both responses are aimed at the wrong target. This post covers where your IP fits in the age of AI, why putting every idea into AI is a distraction, and how a clear AI strategy comes down to choosing one problem worth fixing first.
The Fear Is Real AND Aimed at the Wrong Target
If you have worked by the hour, every headline about AI can make your stomach drop a little. You are good at what you do. Your customers say so, and they send people your way. Then you scroll past another post about a tool that can write the report, draft the strategy, and build the slide deck in minutes, and you close your laptop tired in a way that has nothing to do with sleep.
I hear the same worry from owners in different words: I am fully booked, but I am not making the money I should be. I am the bottleneck in my own business. That worry is reasonable, and I am not going to tell you to ignore it. I spent decades helping large organizations change how they work, and I can tell you the fear is real. It is just aimed at the wrong target.
What AI Is Actually Coming For
The old way of building an expert business makes you the extra pair of hands, the consultant brought in to implement the plan. A customer needs something, you make it by hand, one customer and one calendar slot at a time. Your value rises or falls with the hours you can produce. That model got many of us a long way, and I have lived it myself.
Notice what AI is coming for: the producing, the drafting, the doing hour after hour. That is the work of the extra pair of hands. It is not the work of the person who decides what the work is, why it matters, and what good looks like.
Throwing Every Idea Into AI Is the Same Trap at a Bigger Scale
Here is the twist that catches so many smart people. AI also gives the extra pair of hands a brand-new trap, because now you can say yes to ten ideas instead of one. So you do not just do the work of one customer by hand. You try to do the work of ten ideas by hand.
Spinning on ten ideas is not an AI strategy. It is the same trap at a bigger scale, and it feels like progress while the one problem that was costing real money sits untouched in your notes app.
Command AI Instead of Competing With It
Your role is to command AI. Not to compete with it, and not to be replaced by it, but to command it. That is how you move out of the extra pair of hands role and into the strategist seat.
When I first left corporate, I called myself a contractor. Customers hired me for my expertise and, if I am honest, for my ability to get the work done. One early project had me on site before the project was ready to start, so I sat at a desk and did nothing for about two weeks. It was the first time I worked that way, and the last, because I did not leave my corporate job to clock hours as an extra pair of hands.
I wanted to be recognized for my passion and my expertise, so I changed how I showed up right away. That is the same pivot you make when you go from selling your time to selling your expertise. The person in the strategist seat does not stop caring about the work. They decide what the work is, why it matters, and what good looks like, then direct others to carry it out.
Your IP Is What You Command AI With
First, put your expertise into a tangible form that is yours to own. I call that a signature methodology. The experts who do this well package what they do so they can define and own their IP.
Second, map the route you take your customers on, from where they are today to where they want to be. That becomes your Signature Pathway™.
Once both are clear, you can command AI to carry out work that puts you and your IP to use in a whole new way. AI prepares and you decide. A real AI strategy starts here, because the tools are not what is scarce. Commanding does not mean disappearing, either. You stay present where your presence matters, by choice and never by default.
A Good AI Strategy Starts With the Right Problem
Businesses are not short on AI tools. They are short on someone who can see which problem is worth fixing first.
Experts, creators, and entrepreneurs are never at a loss for ideas, and AI has made it possible to turn every one of them into something with real potential. That is also the challenge. When everything has potential, too many problems get solved at once, things get lost, and we spend our days spinning on random new ideas instead of staying with the one or two that move the needle.
That is AI overwhelm, and it is not a tool problem. It is a strategy problem. I have too many ideas myself, so I keep a mantra close: just because you can does not mean you should. Focus is a harder discipline for people like us, and it gets us farther than more ideas ever will.
When Every Idea Gets Built: One Offer Becomes Five
I am working with a customer right now for whom AI is a double-sided sword. For the first time, she can command AI to build things she never had the skills to build. That is a great gift. But instead of sticking to her strategic plan, she went from one focused offer to five, and each one conflicts with the others.
Her marketing and visibility got a lot harder. Her customers love the options, but confused customers do not buy. They cannot decide, so they stall out. She created friction and confusion for herself, her team, and her customers, and it was not necessary. Same tool, different seat.
Solve One Problem Before the Next One
This is the work I do. We find the biggest challenge at the right time, build a strategy to solve the right problem, and then build and carry out the right thing at the right time. Your AI strategy is only as good as your discipline to solve that problem before you move on to the next one, because there will always be more problems.
When you are in the weeds, that discipline is hard. The distractions come at you all day long, which is why it helps to have someone beside you, holding the focus. And once you can package your expertise, you do the same thing for your customers: you show them the path, then you help them stay on it.
Three Steps to Start Your AI Strategy This Week
You do not need a new tool for any of these. Step one is to name the old belief. Write down: for it to be good, I have to do it myself. Ask how true that has felt, then write the replacement: I decide and AI prepares.
Step two is to pick the one problem. Set a timer for 20 minutes and write down every idea and every problem on your list. For each one, ask three questions. Does this move revenue or give time back? Does this need my judgment, or only my pair of hands? What breaks if this waits a quarter? Then circle one, just one. The rest are not gone. They are waiting for their turn.
Step three is to take one small step into the seat. Write one sentence: I help who get from point A to point B. It will not be perfect, and it is the first piece of your Signature Pathway. Then choose one piece of the work behind your circled problem and decide what you would hand to AI to prepare. You review it. You decide. That is commanding.
Picture the Strategist Seat
Picture a Monday where you open your laptop and you already know the one problem you are solving this month. Your expertise is written down in a form that is yours. Your delivery has support behind it, and the work that used to eat your week is prepared before you sit down, so you spend your time on the part only you can do. You are not an extra pair of hands. You are the strategist.
I am not promising what that looks like for you, because your business is yours. But hold the picture and ask yourself what becomes possible if you lead from that seat. You do not need more AI. You need a clear AI strategy: the strategist seat and one problem worth fixing first.

Hey, everybody. Welcome to season three of The Scalable Expert Podcast, the show for established expert business owners who are maxed out on time and ready to find the scalable impact of their work. I’m your host, Tara Bryan, founder of The Scalable Expert and creator of the INFINITE SCALE™ Method. If you’ve built a business around your expertise but feel stuck in the time for money trap, this podcast is your path forward.
Each week, I’ll share stories and strategies and shifts to help you step into a new scalable business model by declaring your authority, packaging your expert framework, and streamlining your offers and systems to ultimately become a scalable expert. Because it’s not about working harder, it’s about building smarter.
All you need is one signature expert framework, and you can deliver an infinite amount of ways to be able to scale your business. All right. Let’s get started.
Okay, picture this. It’s Sunday night and an expert business owner is sitting at the kitchen table with 14 tabs open, five AI tools all half set up, and the list of 10 new ideas. Every single one of them feels like a real opportunity, but that’s the trouble. Every one of them is possible now. By Friday, none of the ten is finished, and one problem that was quietly costing real money, yep, it’s still sitting in your notes app. So this is a composite of not one person, but most expert business owners that I talk to who are in this situation.
Hey there, welcome to the Scalable Expert podcast. I am Tara Bryan and I’m happy that you’re here today. Today, I wanna talk about this feeling because I think it is being misread, and I think reading it differently, it changes what you do next.
So let’s start with an honest version of this conversation. If you’ve been working by the hour, every headline about AI can make your stomach drop just a little. And you’re good at what you do, your customers say so, they send people your way, and still you scroll past another post about a tool that can write the report, draft the strategy, and build the slide deck in minutes, you close your laptop and you’re tired in a way that has nothing to do with how much sleep you’ve gotten.
I hear it from owners all in different words. “I’m fully booked, but I’m not making the money that I should be. I’m the bottleneck in my own business.” That worry is reasonable, and I’m not gonna tell you to ignore it.
But I wanna offer you a different way to interpret it. I say this as someone who spent decades helping large organizations change how they work. The fear is real, and it’s just aimed at the wrong target.
Here’s what I mean. The old way of building an expert business is this: you’re an extra pair of hands or the consultant brought in to implement the plan or the project. A customer needs something, you make it by hand, one customer, one calendar slot at a time. Your value rises or falls with how many hours you can produce.
That model got a lot of us a long way. I’ve lived it myself.
But notice what AI is coming in for. It’s coming in for the work of the extra pair of hands, the producing, the drafting, the doing hour after hour.
And here’s the twist that catches so many smart people. AI also gives the extra pair of hands a brand-new trap, because now you can say yes to 10 ideas instead of one. So you don’t just do the work of one customer by hand, you try and do the work of 10 ideas by hand. Same trap, bigger scale.
So here is the shift I want you to think about today.
Your role is to command AI, not to compete with it, not to be replaced by it, but to command it. That is how you move out of the extra pair of hands role and into being the strategist.
When I first left corporate, I called myself a contractor. Customers hired me for my expertise. Yep. But they also, if I’m being honest, hired me for my ability to get the work done.
So they wanted me to come in and help them. And I remember one of my very early projects, they wanted me on site. Only the project wasn’t quite ready to be kicked off yet when they hired me. So I came in that first day and I sat at a desk and did nothing. And I did nothing for about two weeks, while we waited for the project to start.
That was the first time I worked that way, and it was the last, because I didn’t leave my corporate job to be an extra pair of hands there to clock hours. I wanted to be recognized for my passion and my expertise for what I brought to the table. So I changed how I showed up right away.
That’s exactly the same pivot you make when you go from selling your time to selling your expertise.
The person in that seat does not stop caring about the work. They decide what the work is, why it matters, and what good looks like. Then they direct others to carry it out. That is available to you now if it’s never been available for you in the past, and here’s how it works.
First, you put your expertise into some sort of tangible form that’s yours to own. We call that a signature methodology. The experts who did this well package what they do into that signature methodology where they’re really able to define and own their IP.
Then you map the route you take your customers on from where they are today to where they want to be. That becomes the signature pathway along that journey.
Once that is clear, you can command AI to carry out your work that puts you and your IP to use in a whole new way. AI prepares and you decide.
And I want to be clear about one thing, commanding does not mean disappearing. You stay present where your presence matters by choice and never by default.
If you have worked by the hour and your future feels uncertain, this is how you start to change the game. You stop stepping into doing the work the same old way. You own your expertise, and you command action via AI, if that’s the direction that you wanna go.
So now I wanna hold onto one sentence, because it’s the exact way I help owners like you. Businesses are not short on AI tools. They are short on someone who can see which problem is worth fixing first.
Think about us, experts, creators, entrepreneurs. We are never at a loss for ideas. And AI has done something remarkable. It has made it possible to turn every single one of those ideas into something with real potential.
But that is also a challenge. When everything has potential, too many problems get solved all at once. Things get lost. We spend our days spinning, bringing new random ideas to life instead of staying on the one or two things that truly move the needle.
That is called AI overwhelm, and I want you to hear this clearly. It’s not a tool problem. It’s a strategy problem. And I will be the first to admit, I have- Also too many ideas, so I keep a mantra close: Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.
Focusing is a harder discipline for people like us, and it is the thing that gets us farther than more ideas ever will. Let me show you the other side of it. I am working with a client right now, and AI is a double-sided sword for her. For the first time, she can command AI to bring things she’s never had the skills to build.
That is a super great gift. But instead of sticking to her strategic plan, she went from one focused offer, to five, and each one conflicts actually with the others. So her marketing and visibility got a lot harder. Her customers love the options, but confused customers don’t buy. They can’t decide, so they stall out.
She created friction and confusion for herself, her team, and her customers, and it wasn’t necessary. So the same tool, different seat.
This is the work that I do. I help business owners find their biggest challenge at the right time. Then we build a strategy to solve the right problem, and then we build and carry out the right thing at the right time.
Here’s how this looks when we sit down together. We build the strategy. We find the one problem that will move the needle. Then my job is to help you stay focused on that one solution before you move on to the next thing, because there will always be problems. Always. Success comes when you can see which problem should be solved first, and you have the discipline to solve it before you move on to the next one, not when you try to solve them all at one time.
I know. I see you. And when you are in the weeds, that discipline is really hard to stick to. The distractions come at you all day long. That is why it helps to have someone beside you, holding the focus.
And once you can package your expertise, you do the same thing for your customers. You show them the path, and once you’re able to show them the path, then you can help them stay on the path.
So let’s make this real. Here are the three steps that you can take this week. You do not need a new tool for any of them.
Step one, name the old belief. Write this down. For it to be good, I have to do it myself. Now, how true has that felt? Now write the replacement, “I decide and AI prepares.”
Step two, pick the one problem. Set a timer for 20 minutes and write down every idea and every problem on your list. For each one, answer three questions. One, does this move revenue or give time back? Number two, does this need my judgment or only my pair of hands? And number three, what breaks if this waits a quarter? Then circle one, just one. That is the problem you bring to your strategist seat this month. The rest can wait. They are not gone, they are just waiting for their turn.
So step three, take one small step into the seat. Write one sentence, “I help who get from point A to point B.” It will not be perfect. That sentence is the first piece of your signature pathway. Then choose one piece of the work behind your circled problem and decide what you would hand to AI to prepare. You review it. You decide. That is commanding.
Now I want you to picture something. Picture a Monday where you open your laptop and you already know the one problem you are solving this month. Your expertise is written down in a form that is yours. Your delivery has support behind it, and the work that used to eat your week is prepared before you sit down, so you spend your time on the part only you can do. You are not an extra pair of hands, you are the strategist.
I’m not promising what that looks like for you. Your business is yours. But I would ask that you hold the picture and ask yourself, “What becomes possible if I lead from that seat?” You not need more AI, you need to put yourself in the strategist seat and one problem worth fixing first.
